Planet Narnia[edit]

Hi, and welcome. I put the traditional welcome boiler plate above. Note the trick of using four tildes to sign your Talk page posts, which is quicker and gives more links than writing out your sig longhand.

In re Ward and Narnia. You may be right that Ward has convinced the universe of Narnian scholars of his thesis, but I haven't seen much evidence of that yet beyond back-cover blurbs, which I never trust. His book is still too recent to have received much serious coverage in critical literature. And the book is a mess: juxtaposition of many ideas with the implication that Lewis must have seen it the same way. What is missing is any testimony from Lewis himself. It's a nice conceit but without much firm historical foundation, and the caliber of the writing is certainly not up to the usual Oxford standards. Ford's criticism of the early recension applies more or less to the book as well, for the thesis has not advanced significantly in the interim. More juxtaposition does not argument make. (Ford's objections are mentioned only in passing of course; I would be interested in seeing what he has to say in the next edition of the Companion, though his brief dismissal suggests he doesn't think there's much to it.)
