Wiki conventions

It's usually undesirable to edit someone else's comments on a talk page, even if correcting grammar or spelling. It's very useful to indent your responses with a colon (:) at the beginning of your response as the first character on the line (no leading spaces) - this way, it's easy to tell your response from the original comment. To get further levels of indenting, add more colons (::: will indent 3 levels, for example). This is particularly important when replying to very old items in the talk page. It's never necessary to describe edits you've made on the talk page of an article- this is tracked automatically by the Wikipedia software and you can see the complete editing history and identify any user's contribution by clicking on the "history" tab at the top of each page. --Wtshymanski (talk) 15:15, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
