Regarding the 3 examples of early overlay journals: It seems that 2 of these have been captured by conventional publishers. JHEP is now published by Springer [1], which charges substantial author processing fees. G&T is now published by MSP, which charges subscription fees [2]. If someone knows how that happened, it could make for an interesting addition to the history.
