Dictionairies[edit]

The following is an email I recieved. "Mr. Burbank, I have to tell you the report you read was incorrect. Ironically, the passage sited in the piece is not even contained in the Miriam Webster 10th edition dictionary! Here's what actually happened: A parent volunteer did find some words contained in the dictionaries used in the classroom objectionable. In an effort to build support to ban the dictionaries, she went directly to the press. The press jumped right on it incorrectly stating in bold headlines that the district was going to ban the dictionaries. The District had to follow the protocol for materials being questioned, which is laid out in Board Policy. A group of parents, teachers, school administrators and impartial public representatives was brought together to view the dictionaries. They unanimously decided that the banning of the dictionaries was not merited. The books in question are still used to this day at the school mentioned in the piece. Finally, you are among just a handful of people (other than the press) to contact us. I hope you can share the truth about what actually happened here two years ago, so others will know the facts. Simply put, our District followed the procedure mandated in Board Policy, and did not ban dictionaries.
