Article restructure[edit]

I'd like to introduce a new major section into this article to allow for information about streaming providers Stan, Presto, Netflix, etc. I'm trying to think of the best way of naming existing section (perhaps under a "hardware included" section, as well as separating services such as iTunes and Xbox which are linked to a particular subset of hardware.) The problem is there is a bit of overlap - Foxtel is available as a software only service on the PS3 (probably others, but my experience is PS3) - although their primary market are all in one (hardware, connectivity and content).

How about:

  • Hardware-based services
    • Fetch TV
    • Telstra T-Box
    • Foxtel
    • TiVo
  • Software-based, tied to particular delivery provider or hardware
    • Bigpond Movies & TV
    • Xbox 360
    • iTunes Australia
  • Unlimited streaming
    • Stan
    • Presto
    • Netflix

  • I'd organise them as IPTV services with connected hardware, TV catch up services, and online streaming services. As you said all of them operate on a number of different platforms, but their primary mode would probably define them; the other option is just to list the services and devices they support without grouping them at all. Either way an update of the page would be good, it'd also be good to add mention of apps to sections (for example, most FTV now have apps for watching shows on mobile devices or on PS3). I also don't understand your hardware required qualifier with iTunes, it's available on many different hardware platforms, how does that differentiate it from an internet based service that needs hardware to operate a browser?     • Thanks ColonialGrid, sounds like a good split. I put iTunes under "tied to a particular delivery provider or hardware" since I incorrectly understood it had to be primarily bought via an Apple device (or iTunes on a PC/Mac, and a bit of Googling tells me you can at least browse the iTunes App Store on an Android device, so I don't know what to think regarding that! As you said, there is a lot of crossover which does make it hard to categorise them easily. -- Chuq (talk) 05:43, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

      • Hello, I just reorganised the page a bit... admittedly I didn't check this page beforehand (Oops!). (If you think my changes were suboptimal or awful please feel free to change or reverse – of course).
      • The grouping I went for is:
      • 1 Catch up TV Services, 2 Streaming Services, 3 ISP & IPTV Services, 4 Console Streaming, 5 Defunct Services & Devices
      • I put catch up and streaming services higher up on the page as I think they would likely have more relevance today for more people when thinking about internet TV in Australia. I also added descriptions to a number of the services under those sections and removed some external links.
      • The next three sections are new (although the content is pretty much just recycled from what was there previously). My rationale was that there were too many high level sections with too little content, so it made sense to combine them. Additionally, I thought it made little sense to mix in defunct services and devices with active services (given that the article was not organised chronologically.)
      • I also revised the introduction slightly to try to make it better reflect the content of the article and deleted the "Other" section (I didn't think the content included added much to the article. Where it seemed advisable, I integrated deleted sections into other sections.)
      • Finally, throughout I tried to remove information that seemed more "commercially relevant" i.e. perhaps less Encyclopedic than may be desired or information that was unsubstantiated (and added little value to the article).
      • Apologies for the number of edits :)
      • As for your idea Aussie4ever4 of a sports section – there are a fair number of sports streaming services so that would make sense to me as a subsection under "2 Streaming Services." Or perhaps as a higher level category if there was sufficient information.
      • Regarding ColonialGrid's suggestion for organising, I think that makes a lot of sense (and it is what I've done for the most part now I think of it.)
