At first glance, the term "emigrants" seems unusual, as it implies that the parties crossing through this area were not "immigrants" to the United States but rather people leaving the US. This was in fact the case, as the related article "Emigrant Pass" points out, explaining that "pioneers, heading west, emigrated from the United States to California, which was part of Mexico until it was captured by the United States in the Mexican–American War (1846–1848)".
