Shuvaloy "Shuv" Majumdar MP (born 1979/80)[1] is a Canadian politician, foreign policy advisor, and former consultant. A member of the Conservative Party of Canada, Majumdar was elected to serve as Member of Parliament for Calgary Heritage in a 2023 by-election.[2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Shuvaloy Majumdar was born in Calgary, Alberta to Indian immigrant parents of Bengali Hindu origin.[4] He attended the University of Calgary.

Foreign policy and political career[edit]

For over two decades Shuvaloy Majumdar has worked to advance democracy and security in Canada and across the world.

In Shuvaloy's earlier years, he worked alongside Preston Manning, in building the Canadian conservative movement.[5]

Shuvaloy previously served as foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Minister John Baird, assisting on issues in international security and the global economy.[6]

From 2006-2010, he worked with U.S. Senator John McCain's International Republican Institute - assisting on-the-ground efforts for democratic reformers across Iraq and Afghanistan.[7]

Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Shuvaloy was the Global Director at Harper & Associates and founding Foreign Policy Director & Munk Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. [8]

Member of the House of Commons[edit]

Shuvaloy Majumdar was elected to the House of Commons in a 2023 by-election following the resignation of Bob Benzen.[2][3] Upon his election, he became the third Conservative MP of South Asian descent.[9] In September 2023, the National Post named Majumdar as one of '12 to watch on Canada's rising right'.[10] Shuvaloy is a former member of the Standing Committee on Public Health, which he served on from Fall of 2023 to early 2024.[11] He currently serves as a member of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights.[12]

Political views[edit]

Majumdar has argued for replacing "social justice with social mobility."[13] As a candidate, Majumdar stated his opposition to carbon taxes.[14]
