Jacob James Sommers (born May 5, 1997) is an American former professional baseball pitcher.

Career[edit]

Sommers attended Hortonville High School in Hortonville, Wisconsin. In 2015, his senior year, he pitched to a 1–0 record and a 1.77 ERA.[1] Following his senior year, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he played college baseball. As a senior in 2019, he compiled a 3.60 ERA over thirty innings.[2] After the season, Sommers was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the tenth round, with the 305th overall selection, of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.[3][4]

St. Louis Cardinals[edit]

Sommers signed with the Cardinals and made his professional debut with the Johnson City Cardinals of the Rookie-level Appalachian League, going 2–3 with a 4.18 ERA over 12 games (ten starts).[5] He did not play in a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

Colorado Rockies[edit]

On February 1, 2021, Sommers (alongside Austin Gomber, Mateo Gil, Elehuris Montero, and Tony Locey) was traded to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Nolan Arenado and $50 million.[7][8] He was assigned to the Spokane Indians of the High-A West for the 2021 season, going 3–2 with a 5.59 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 37 innings.[9] Sommers missed all of the 2022 season while rehabbing an elbow injury.[10] He returned to action in 2023, recording five strikeouts across five scoreless appearances for the rookie–level Arizona Complex League Rockies.[11]

In 2024, Sommers made 10 appearances split between the Double–A Hartford Yard Goats and Triple–A Albuquerque Isotopes, accumulating a 10.32 ERA with 15 strikeouts across 11+13 innings pitched. On June 2, 2024, Sommers announced his retirement from professional baseball.[12]
