Hargurdeep Saini (Punjabi: ਹਰਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਸੈਣੀ), also known as Deep Saini, is a scientist,[1] and is the President and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.[2] He previously served as President of Dalhousie University as well as further administrative positions at Canadian and Australian universities. His time at McGill has been marked by resistance to both French language legislation made by the provincial government of Quebec and a push to quash protest movements at his university.

Career[edit]

Hargurdeep Saini was previously the President and Vice-Chancellor of Dalhousie University,[3] a Vice-Chancellor and President of University of Canberra, a vice-president of University of Toronto, and principal of the university's Mississauga campus, and dean of the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario.[4][5] Saini became a noted plant physiologist[1][6] and served as director general of the Plant Biology Research Institute in Montreal before moving into university administration.[7]

McGill University[edit]

On 14 November 2022, it was announced that Deep Saini will step down from his role as president of Dalhousie, effective 31 December 2022,[3] to become Principal (now known as 'President' since December 2023) and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.[8]

Over the first year of Deep Saini’s tenure as President and Vice-Chancellor, he led McGill through a series of challenges, including the controversial[9][10] [11]revised tuition policy put forward by the Government of Québec, which would: increase tuition for Canadian students outside of Quebec by 30 per cent and would claw back more international tuition fees for redistribution across francophone universities.[12]

In December 2023, McGill launched a legal proceeding[13] against the Government given the forecasted adverse effects that the new tuition policies would have on the University’s future.[14][15]

In May 2024, a pro-Palestinian encampment was established on McGill’s downtown campus in response to the war in the Middle East, which coincided with parallel protest movements seen across universities in Canada and the United States.[16] [17][18]Citing health and safety concerns, the University filed a second request for an injunction[19]; in the meantime, McGill’s administration held discussions with members of the encampment to reach a resolution.[20]
