Largo, Florida

I've been adding to the Largo, Florida page and I'm concerned with all the external links I've added. Is it possible to have too many? I also wonder if the timeline should have a page of his own. Could you take a loo at it?

I think it is possible to have too many. What I would expect in this section would be official city sites and the largest and most influential companies in the city. In general, things that contribute to the city of Largo, Florida. Things that would be confusing to the general public could use a little note afterwards like "Nationwide company that originated in Largo", etc...

The questionable ones to me are:

1. Pinch a Penny: I also live in the Tampa Bay area so I know Pinch a Penny is a big deal but it looks like it originated in Clearwater, Florida, not Largo. Is that true?
2. Paradyne: I've never heard of this company and their website is very slow. It looks like it's being acquired. Is there something that differentiates this from any other telecom hardware manufacturer?
3. Your picture site: You have fantastic pictures. I'd recommend pulling your pictures into Wikipedia and putting them on the Largo page itself — and taking out the link to your site. Having the link to your site might qualify as vanity which is frowned on. Dozens and dozens of people in Largo could do the same thing if they wanted.
4. County maps: These need to be moved to the county articles instead of Largo.
5. Clearwater Central: Not sure this is appropriate at all since it's a for-profit web site. If it is appropriate, it needs to be moved to the Clearwater article.

The timeline seems small enough to keep in the same page but you might want to move it to a different part of the article. External Links are usually right near the bottom. It could probably be cleaned up a little too.

Oh, I didn't notice who added which ones. I whacked the Clearwater Central one for you!  :) I left Paradyne since it's apparently a decent-sized employer. I'd still recommend looking for something to distinguish that company from others HQ'ed in Largo.

Hi Mike. I've had a read through Largo, Florida - I can see that you've made some valuable additions there! I made a couple of very minor copy edits myself, and I can see that your involvement in the article has also encouraged other edits to work on the article. And that's what it's all about!

Unfortunately I don't know anything about The Black Company and I don't know anyone else who does - I just spotted one of your edit on the "recent changes" list and added the stub tag. The article's talk page is a good place to start, but I can see that you've already posted there. Have you tried looking up related articles (e.g. Glen Cook)? The Glen Cook talk page has a link through to a Glen Cook wiki - I reckon that would be a good way to find an expert.

Pages can only be locked against editing if there's a serious vandalism problem there. Administrators' user pages are probably more prone to vandalism, as they are more likely to give vandals warnings in the first place (the user-page vandalism then tends to come as a childish retaliation). If you add your user page to your watch list, you can quickly see if someone starts meddling with it. If someone does vandalise your page, you'll just have to rise above it and not take it personally! In fact, you could even take it as a bizarre complement - it means someone out there is taking an interest in you!!

Yeh quite possibly a sock, however I'm not sure it's worth doing anything in particular about it. Both the ip and Dustin099 are going to get blocked pretty quick on the 'merit' of their own actions if they continue. You might be interested in WP:SOCK#Tagging_identified_sock_puppets, just make sure you put evidence into the relevant template.

Also it's not really appropriate to add a {{welcome}} to vandal pages. It includes the line "welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay." We don't really want vandals to stay. There are a load of alternative templates at {{TestTemplates}}, the most used being the test1 to test4 series. Petros471 21:53, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Aye, thought you were just trying to be friendly, which is good :) But in cases like this probably need to be a bit harsher ;) Some of the templates on TestTemplates are not too bad at biting (e.g. the ones in the 'good faith' colum such as {{nn-test}} and {{test0}}. However I do quite like the {{npa}}, and that is a rather important policy on Wikipedia that needs to be made clear to all users. Diffrent RC patrollers have different warning styles, and as long as they know what is available and why that's fine. Cheers, Petros471 22:07, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Largo hotel pmr 01.jpg

Florida spam

MMGI (talk · contribs)'s only activity has been adding links to as many Flordia-related pages as possible, all with the same description. It looks like an attempt to promote one or more private visitor's centers and their online services. The one that erased all doubts that it might possibly not be spam was this edit to John Ringling, whose only relation to Sarasota, FL is that he has a house there. It's clearly not a useful link for that particular article, and putting it at the top of the external link section raises my spam-red-flag even higher. The pattern of edits across all the afffected articlese fits the profile of a spammer very well.

The links I removed were to: floridasbeach.com (outbound WP links), which appears to be owned by a private company called "St. Petersburg Clearwater Area CVB" (according to WHOIS) located in an industrial complex in Clearwater; and sarasotafl.org (outbound WP links), which appears to be owned by "SarasotaConvention& Visitors Bureau" in a more convincing location near touristy-looking areas, but I'm dubious it's legit because of the spammish pattern. If that last is actually a legit convention center, then likely the spamminess is still prohibited by Wikipedia:External links under the principle that Wikipedia is not for promotion. If MMGI is linking to others, they should probably be removed too.

By the way, good job for contributing so much to Wikipedia's Florida articles! I noticed a lot of parks-related links on some articles such as Myakka River State Park and looked into them in case they were also spam. Then I noticed how many Florida articles you've worked on and was reassured to see that an editor in good standing had selected those links. :-) — Saxifrage ✎ 21:55, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Stanton article needs photo

Hi Mike, I see you're in Largo. Could you call Steve Stanton and try to get ten minutes of his time, to take a photo for his Wikipedia article? Just tell him that Wikipedia has weird copyright restrictions so we can't use any of the images in the newspapers and we need one of our own; that's probably easier than explaining the GFDL or the odd interpretations of "fair use" that go on here. It is a huge mistake on the city's part, imho. The more attention this gets, the worse they are going to look. I think Stanton may be willing to give you a short photo session though; according to this article he's taking this as an opportunity for education, "before the news media decided it was insignificant", and there's nothing Wikipedia does better than education. Some of us have taken quite an interest in this, and you can tell him someone (me) from Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies asked you to get a photo, and if you're up to it, an interview for Wikinews. If you're not comfortable approaching him, that's okay, but from what he's told the media and NPR, it sounds like he'd be glad to meet with you when he has the time.
