The research area list is too long, it can benefit from a smaller chic list. Kmouly (talk) 01:45, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion of edits[edit]

[[User:Jmmason|of topics and fields is so diverse. The "top 5" claim was provided without citation (which violates Wikipedia standards), and almost surely is based on rankings of "library and information science" programs which is a proud but small component of SI's academic and research coverage and faculty specializations. Not a meaningful statement for most of the school (other areas of which many informally believe rank in top 3), and implicitly misrepresents the school as being primarily a traditional LIS program, which it is not. I would also suggest that this is the type of claim that is likely to lead to edit wars when students from other programs see it and want to compete; better just to avoid poorly-grounded and self-serving boasting.

Image copyright problem with Image:Umichigan color seal.gif[edit]

The image Image:Umichigan color seal.gif is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Factual inaccuracies[edit]

There are some factual inaccuracies on this page. I am currently employed by UMSI, so I am reporting them here rather than making the edits myself to avoid WP:COI. Issues and citations are provided below:

  1. Infobox: Established is incorrect, should be either 1926 (founding of the school) or 1996 (charter of current name) [1]
  2. Introduction: we do not offer degrees in "informatics" only "information".
  3. Introduction: slogan is not accurate, current slogan is "Information changes everything".
  4. Introduction: multiple places refer to school as "SI" which just stands for "school of information." The abbreviation for University of Michigan School of Information is "UMSI".
  5. Introduction: "It is currently housed in the North Quadrangle..." Classrooms and some administrative offices are housed in NQ but the school has offices and meeting spaces in other nearby buildings.
  6. Introduction: missing information on online Masters of Applied Data Science. Possible language: "In 2019, the School opened its first online-only degree program, the Master of Applied Data Science." [2]
  7. Undergraduate Degree: This is no longer accurate on a host of counts (UMSI is not involved with the bachelor's in informatics, the social computing track no longer exists, other tracks have changed, etc.)
  8. Undergraduate Degree: "Students will take classes in..." list is somewhat inaccurate. More accurate would be "Students take classes in programming, communications, statistics, analytics, and design" [3]
  9. Undergraduate Degree: "students already enrolled at The University of Michigan..." is misleading. Students from community colleges and other educational institutions in the U.S. are welcome to apply as transfer students, provided they meet certain prerequisites. [4]
  10. Undergraduate Degree: "Three core courses..." There are four core courses: Data-Oriented Programming, Career and Internship Studio - Design Your Success, Models of Social Information Processing, and Information Environments and Work [5]
  11. Doctoral Degree: "typically four years" should be "four to five" [6]
  12. Doctoral Degree: The "fields such as" section is inaccurate and unsourced. The doctoral students work in the same fields as faculty [7].
  13. Faculty and Research: The list of fields is outdated. [8]
  14. History: the history is incomplete and goes back as far as 1909 [9]
  15. External links: "Research Centers" links to an outdated page that does not describe research centers (UMSI has never had any).
  16. External links: Faculty list is outdated, current: https://www.si.umich.edu/directory?field_person_firstname_value=&field_person_lastname_value=&rid=4
  17. External links: Several refer to UMSI as "SI" which is ambiguous and inaccurate.
  18. External links: MHI program involves several schools, including UMSI, SPH, and the Medical School.
  19. External links: "iSchools" is spelled incorrectly and is incorrectly described as a "project".

Article Structure[edit]

The structure of this article could be improved:

First, History is conventionally the first main section.

Second, the degree sections could be combined into a single "Degrees Granted" section to improve the readability and organization of the article. Elplatt (talk) 22:12, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
