All hypocritical

If 76 of 192 countries have recognized this illegal separation, why you respect the minority, big minority (look the population of Russia, India, China, Brazil, Indonesia, Iran and other big states which do not recognize this illegal act)? Here you must put map of Serbia and under ref you can mention that USA pushed separation. Also you must mention that in 1999. in Pristina lived 40 000 of Serbs and tday just 44. Write a bit about ethnical cleansing of Serbs. Don't close your eyes. Today Kosovo tomorrow Quebec, New Mexico, Texas, Basqia, Wales, North Ireland, Bavaria, Kurdistan and who knows what else. Be fair! Respect laws, international laws, UN Chapter and majority!79.175.69.103 (talk) 03:45, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Well this person clearly seems to have a very narrow minded Serbian point of view. I think its time that Serbia lets go, and let the Serbian minority in Kosovo agree and the new reality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.217.14.14 (talk) 08:09, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

WHAT? This was a direct attack ON Serbia! Just let this go??? Yes crimes were committed by BOTH sides, well ALL sides in reality but the one the USA is fed daily is Sbrenica which the USA set up! Why are you not angry about any of this? Yugoslavia was crushed as a whole! The Serbs were the ones blamed for it and your telling them to just let it go? This article is completely biased as with all western propaganda. There is a growing education about this war and we here the USA can not believe this happened. Do your research, read the documents before and during and look where the weapons and funding came from! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.251.116.164 (talk) 05:01, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Indepence in each case - yet this seems even more narrow-minded to me. As mentioned, the majority of the UN member states have not recognized Kosovo's independence. I think the current introduction "Pristina is the capital and largest city of Kosovo" fits the actual situation quite good, because it can both be understood as the captial of independent Kosovo or the capital of the Serbian province. --Maturion (talk) 19:35, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Elections

I believe the time is now, as good as anytime till now, to edit the entire article and to align it with the reality, viewed both from historical point and from the present perspective. Kosovo has just passed another important test in the eyes of its citizens and also the entire international community : we just had the Local elections nad they were a great success again ! There was an increase on participation in regard from 2007 elections (~ 100,000 plus voters), they where in accordance to European Standards for Elections ( many praises are directed to all Kosovo, it's government and people, for excellent completion of election process so far, from Washington, London and from the EU delegation which was monitoring the process) and what is very important a significant number or serbophone kosovars voted last Sunday for their representatives. Bearing in mind all above and the fact that Kosovo has declared it's independence once and for all from Serbia and from any other administration which is not elected or welcomed by its people, I think the administrator should review the text about Prishtina and make the changes accordingly.

In hope the above arguments and the reality on field will be taken in consideration, I thank anyone who contributed on this subject with their objective argumentations.

Sincerely,

Blerim, (Prishtina born citizen and still living there) Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Kosovo GDP

Hi, I wanted to incporate some information into the economy section, however it seems you cannot edit it. In 1981 Kosovo's GDP per capita was 33% of the Yugoslav average, while Pristina's GDP per capita was 70% of the Yugoslav average. I think it points out the massive differences in development between Kosovo and the rest of Yugoslavia, but also within Kosovo, since Pristina as a city was much more developed than the rest of Kosovo. Any objections to including this? here's the source [1]

When I read "An Albanian millionaire in Croatia is building the largest building in the Balkans. Up to 262 metres (860 ft) high and with a capacity to hold 20,000 people it is indeed a jewel.", all I can think is... this reads like an advertisement. --oKtosiTe talk 10:38, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Is Pristina part of Kosovo or Serbia?

There is an edit war in Tafa Air. Since the info box of this article says Pristina is in Kosovo I had changed it in the Tafa Air article once. This has been reverted. Another user always changes it to Kosova and another one back to Serbia. I don't know what's right so please help me. Thanks in advance. --Albspotter (talk) 09:09, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

It is part of both: Pristina is part of Kosovo, and Kosovo remains a part of Serbia.
Basically, Kosovo is a disputed territory, with limited recognition. The first line in the Kosovo article states "Kosovo is a disputed territory in the Balkans."
As a result, Pristina should remain officially in Serbia until said dispute is resolved.
There is also the existing discussion at the Kosovo talk page, which is the appropriate place to bring this up. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 09:21, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Look, what's disputed isn't whether Pristina is a part of Kosovo, it's whether Kosovo is a part of Serbia, i.e. saying Pristina is a part of Kosovo is agreeable on both parts, why don't we stick to that ? -- CD 13:45, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, Pristina is in Kosovo - no one questioned that. However, Kosovo remains a disputed territoty (and not a country). As a result - since we are listing countries in the section in question (and not regions/provinces/states etc), Pristina will stay listed under Serbia until the matter is resolved. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 10:51, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
On articles where Kosovo is mentioned, we're putting a note aside which describes the nature of the dispute to avoid flame wars (Kosovo; Serbia; Kosovo/Serbia; Serbia/Kosovo; Kosovo/UNMIK/Serbia; etc). Thank you. Btw, why should we discuss the Tafa Air incident in this talk page? kedadial 14:14, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Because this is a general question. If it says "country: Kosovo" here than it should be the same in every article that mentions Pristina and the country it belongs to. --Albspotter (talk) 14:21, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Absolutely disagree with the suggestion/course of action by user Kedadi. We should leave that little disclaimer for the Kosovo page (and its there already, starting with the very first sentence). This is a simple list of destinations served by a fledgling little airline. Let’s leave the politics and protests out of it. Once the status of Kosovo is settled, it’s an easy enough fix to make the change across Wikipedia articles. Until then, leave the status quo. Which is more accurate anyway, because Pristina is in Kosovo, which, in turn, remains in Serbia. Jasepl (talk) 16:32, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm really sorry that you disagree but there is a consensus for that (something that I'm not comping up right now) and we've agreed to use the word Kosovo with a note aside. Thank you. kedadial 16:58, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
You've nothing to be sorry about. That said, I didn't find any consensus at either the Kosovo or the Pristina talk pages - do you know where it is? And in any event, as I've said several times already, the Kosovo article starts out saying (and I quote): "Kosovo (Albanian: Kosova, Kosovë; Serbian: Косово or Косово и Метохија, Kosovo or Kosovo i Metohija[6]) is a disputed territory in the Balkans." As everyone is well aware, there is a dispute. One that will be resolved at some point. Until that happens, we should retain the status quo. In any event, since this matter is being discussed, please don't make any more changes or reverts until it is resolved. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 17:36, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
  • By the way, all of the other editors who have been advocating the retention of Listing Pristina under Serbia have no connection or emotional bond, nor any personal stake in Pristina/Kosovo/Serbia/the Balkans. It might be worthwhile keeping in mind our unbiased nature and intent when you read the above. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 17:44, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
AFAIK the consensus has been reached in this discussion. The Kosovo-note template can be found in any Kosovo-related article, such as: Šar Mountains, Pristina, Prizren, Adem Jashari, Batlava Lake, etc. Thank you. kedadial 18:01, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Incidentally, it's part of both.

It is SERBIA

Please, do not change facts! You are not Security Council of the UN to establish new states!!!!!!!! Pristina is city in Serbia and not capital of some selfproclaimed state of Kosovo which is not recognized by 2/3 of countries and 80% of world's population. Wikipedia can not put FAKE facts!!!!!!!!!!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.87.199.15 (talk) 22:07, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia has to be neutral. You must mention that it is a part of Serbia for Serbia and 2/3 of world's state, while for Albanian separatists and 1/3 of countries (like "free" Afghanistan and some else) is a "state"... so Pristina is not a capital of some selfproclaimed Kosovo but the largest city of Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija, at least by UN ! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.87.216.248 (talk) 15:57, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Pristina is part of Kosovo, the new state! :) So stop bitching about it man. Its over, get on with your life...its what most of the people want in Kosovo and this affects you none. So move on, and maybe focuse more on doing your homework rather then talk nonsense

…since by its current external borders it implies that Kosovo is still part of Serbia, a status that is not recognized internationally. To be NPOV, the map should show only the borders of Kosovo itself.--MaGioZal (talk) 15:18, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Edit request from Thekanun1, 1 May 2010

{{editsemiprotected}} Name of city is : Prishtina (Kosova) Prishtina is the capital and the largest city of Kosovo, it and its suburbs are estimated to have a total population of over 500,000. It is unclear how many inhabitants the city has, as the population has for decades boycotted the censuses organized in former Yugoslavia.

The area of Prishtina has a long history, in its vincity archaeological discoveries have been found which date back to the early neolithical ages.

Southeast of the city, the remains of Ulpiana were discovered, the center of the Illyrian province of Dardania. Ulpiana dates back to pre Roman times, during Roman rule Ulpiana flourished it was renewed in the 6th century during the rule of Justinian, after whom it was called Iustinana Secunda. According to inscriptions on the monuments from Ulpiana, it is apparent that it was one of the most beautiful cities of the Illyrian Dardania, as it was often reffered to as Ulpiana Splendissima. A number of articles were discovered here such as coins, ceramics, weapons, jewlery, all of which are exhibited at the Museum of History of Kosovo in Prishtina.

Edit

Can we please edit this Article to make it look similar to those of other capital cities.

this would make the whole page seem more pleasant and it would put Prishtina/Pristina in line with other capitals cities from around the world.

Please take this into consideration when making new edits on the page.

Name of the article

Personally I don't support Kosovan independence but I don't believe that much can be done about that now. Anyway, this article should be titled "Prishtinë or Prishtina" which are the common Albanian spellings of the city. I know this is English Wikipedia but that isn't the point - spellings of major cities where there are ethnic problems should use the spelling of the majority of people in that city. English spellings will change overtime in the same way that Bombay (Mumbai), Peking (Beijing), Stettin (Szczecin), Breslau (Wroclaw), Constantinople (Istanbul), Fiume (Rijeka), Zara (Zadar) and all the others that have changed their spelling in English to reflect the wishes of the people in that area.--78.155.48.36 (talk) 21:35, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

"I know this is English Wikipedia but that isn't the point." Well actually it is the point. English Wikipedia must use common English-language spellings, and at present "Pristina" is the preferred spelling in English. Should this change in the future then the article should also change, but we're not there yet. Bazonka (talk) 08:01, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Edit request from Atdheu, 10 April 2011

I think that it is not logical to put on a name of a city as it is called by its enemies, rather than the way it is called by its inhabitants, and is recognized internationally. It is as if writing New York City in Cyrillic and claiming that that is the norm. In the name of objective truth I would like to change some of the entries in the name of Prishtina, the capitol of Kosova, and that the name Pristina be redirected to Prishtina instead. If truth is what you want, truth is what you will get, in this objective website. Please let me be objective.

Note: I have moved this edit request from Talk:Prishtina, which redirects here. Dabomb87 (talk) 17:09, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
Names of article titles are not chosen based on winners, enemies, or things of that sort. Rather, the only decision we make is what the most common name is in English sources. For example, we call the beautiful and famous city in Italy Florence, even though no one who lives there calls it that--they call it "Firenze". Similarly, the names of Russian cities are writing with English characters, not Cyrillic. For more info on how the naming policy works, see WP:Article titles and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names). Having said that, I have literally zero opinion as to what the most common English name of this city is, so you're welcome to carry on a discussion here about what that is. Just note that your rationale for wanting a name change cannot involve the arguments you raised in your edit request. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:08, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Part of history section regarding Balkan wars

This small part is based upon 3 sources,2 of which are based in Vienna and Budapest, main cities of Austro-Hungarian Empire. In those times,Austro-Hungarian Empire had very clear anti Serbian attitude so these sources could, very well be pure propaganda against Serbia,in context of hostility which will result in World War I.

3rd sourcе (Archbishop of Skopje),used to source 2 claims:

  1. After the Serbian army took the city of Pristina in October 1912, the retaliation against the civilian population was fierce
  2. Number of Albanians of Pristina killed in the early days of the Serbian rule is estimated at 5,000

says folowing regarding Pristina:

  1. In Prishtina, the number of Albanians slain is estimated at 5,000. But it would seem here that the Albanians, under the direction of Turkish officers, misused the white flag and treacherously murdered numerous Serb officers and many soldiers. The exact number is not known.
  2. Prizrend [Prizren]. The town surrendered without a fight, but this did not stop a repetition of the horrors committed against the Albanians everywhere else, with the possible exception of Prishtina.

Whole part of article lacks of (neutral) sources and is (deliberately) misusing other sources. CrniBombarder!!! Шумски Крст (†) 17:11, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

The origin of the name

I agree that the big majority of the slavic cities, towns, place, rivers, mountains around Europe have names that are originary slavic. But you just can't write that it is wrong that Pristina is not a Serbian name. It is. Almost every geographical name in Serbia is of serbian-slavic origin. Like in Poland the names are of polish-slavic origin. Please correct the mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vukajlija54 (talkcontribs) 09:15, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

The origin of the Prishtina name is undocumented and hardly can be taken as a given fact that it has a Slavic origin. I'm not disputing any claim on Prishtina's name but why not taking into consideration other possibilities like Dardan origin or the latin words such as: pristina, pristinum ...what can be more obvious, why searching for more complicated answers when simpler ones are pretty explanatory, satisfactory and very often correct ones.

Pristina is Serbia

Since according to international law Kosovo is part of Serbia, the UN officially doesn't accept its unilateral deceleration of independence, and as this is disputable area, the UN is known to be reliable guide, I propose changing map from so-called Republic of Kosovo to Serbia map. Comments are appreciated. Alex discussion 14:48, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Strong Oppose Cut the c**p already, we've heard that a million times before. International law hasn't said that Kosovo's independence is illegal and the ICJ's Opinion (the only legal ruling we have to go on) ruled in Kosovo's favour. Not to mention that the majority of the world recognises Kosovo and that Kosovo is apart of an increasing amount of international organisations. Anyway, the Kosovo map is neutral as it doesn't show Kosovo as independent or as apart of Serbia. That is NPOV. IJA (talk) 18:21, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
ICJ's opinion is not due to 'international law', but because Serbian question to the ICJ was so awkwardly formulated, but just that can't mean ICJ favors Kosovo's unlawful separation, because:
  • Before its unilateral declaration of independence, Kosovo was defined as a province of Serbia under UN administration. So, as it's a province of Serbia, Serbia's constitution applies, which points out following in its preamble: "Kosovo is an inalienable part of Serbia". Alex discussion 14:59, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Kosovo's separation was "unlawful"? That is an opinion of a minority of countries in the world. No International Court and no International Organisation has ever ruled that Kosovo's 'Separation' was "unlawful". However according to most countries in the world, Kosovo's Independence was Lawful/ legal. As to Serbia's 2006 Constitution, according to some it was was in violation of UNSCR 1244 as it was a unilateral attempt at finalising Kosovo's final status without giving the people of Kosovo a say in it when UNSCR 1244 specifically says that the final status must be mutually agreed by both parties. Our role here at Wikipedia is to neutrally present the facts and showing Kosovo in a map of Serbia is not neutral and it is not a fact. IJA (talk) 17:56, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
One question: why is not neutral representing facts as they are, based on international law? Alex discussion 14:59, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
  • The same applies to the capital cities of the Constituent Countries of the UK, Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London are not showed/ portrayed entirely as being within the whole Untied Kingdom. The Kosovo map is neutral because the border with Serbia is dotted and that means it can either be an internal or an external border, it is intentionally ambiguous to reflect a NPOV. We can't afford to take sides on Wikipedia. We need to be neutral! IJA (talk) 07:04, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
    • Agree . Kosovo is Serbia. Косово је Србија, Косово это Сербия. You have to rely on the opinion of the UN. She still did not recognize "Republic of Kosovo". Well, I at least remove the map of Serbia you just do not have any right.--Region190 (talk) 10:52, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
This is Wikipedia, not UN-ipedia. Anyway the UN doesn't have the power or the capacity to recognise or not recognise countries, recognition is down to the individual member states. IJA (talk) 12:54, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

University

I think that label Univerity of Pristina should lead reader to Wikipedia page under this title: University of Pristina and not on article Universiteti i Prishtinës or that label in introductory section should be Universiteti i Prishtinës, not University of Pristina since per Wikipedia there is dispute over the usage of that label between Universiteti i Prishtinës and Univerzitet u Prištini from North Kosovska Mitrovica. I prefere label Universiteti i Prishtinës but you can see which option is better. The current approach looks somewhat biased although I can understand used logic-merge article with institution actually located in city. But this deliberately ignore name dispute and prescribe solution what is not acceptable per Wikipedia standards. All the best.--MirkoS18 (talk) 21:58, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Now I see that the same problem exists in article North Kosovska Mitrovica that link label University of Pristina to article Univerzitet u Prištini. I don't know if there is some Wikipedia decision on that or it is just intervention of interested parties in name conflict that try to manipulate readers?--MirkoS18 (talk) 22:04, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

The name of the capital city Prishtina is written mistakenly. Namely, it should be Prishtina and not Pristina, Kosova and not Kosovo and so forth! Also, most of the toponyms of Kosova in use by Wikipedia are of serbian language, and this in not correct. If you still insist in using Serbian toponyms, you should first use those in Albanian language followed by those in Serbian language. Such as the case is with Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje, Ferizaj/Urosevac, Pejë/Pec and many others.

Hey guys! I don't understand why the Turkish translation of the city is added in the official name. There is not a significant percentage of the Turkish population in the city, nor the language spoken. If there is source that Turkish is also an official language of Prishtina, then please send it to me! I feel it's useless to add the Turkish name to the official name of the city.

I'm pretty sure that the Turkish Language has official status in the Municipality of Pristina. Even the city's official website is available in Turkish [1]. Travelstig (talk) 21:08, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Not done: Hi there. Unfortunately we can't just add any random link to the list. See WP:ELNO. Perhaps a better location would be Pristina on Wikivoyage. Stickee (talk) 23:32, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

BOLD, revert, discuss cycle

A disruptive editor has been causing some problems. LeoC12 has twice now without consensus changed the subdivision name in the infobox from Kosovo (with status note) to Serbia. This user has also changed the opening sentence "capital and largest city of Kosovo. (with status note)" to "capital and largest city of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija". I have a a few issues with this:

  1. No consensus!
  2. It is extremely POV.
  3. LeoC12's original argument was "Why not show it from a Serbian perspective?". I'll answer that question, for the same reason why we don't show it from an Albanian perspective because it'd be in violation of NPOV.
  4. We already have the status note, yet LeoC12 removed it and changed to just "Serbia" claiming it is "NPOV" lol.
  5. LeoC12's excuse for his gross POV edit was It is from a NPOV, as 85 members of the UN don't recognise the so-called "Republic of Kosovo", what about the other 108? Also this article isn't even about the Republic of Kosovo.
  6. It is disputed as to whether Pristina is in Serbia or not but what isn't disputed is that Pristina is in Kosovo, everyone agrees with that (regardless of whether you think Kosovo is a country or a province), Pristina is still in a place called Kosovo.
  7. I don't know why he has changed in the opening sentence "Kosovo" to "Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija", this is very POV. The Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija only exists in theory in the Serbian Constitution; it doesn't exist as a reality.
  8. It is childish disruptive behaviour which is damaging to the article and I feel he wants to start an edit war.
  9. Let me remind people of the Arbitration Committee's discretionary sanctions for Balkan related articles.

"No-one disputes that Pristina is Kosovo? That depends whether you mean the so-called Republic of Kosovo or the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija" - Either way, Pristina is still in Kosovo. IJA (talk) 21:42, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Total area

The current estimate of the area (854 sq km) seems to be incorrect, mainly due to the formation of new municipalities that were formerly part of Prishtina. A 2014 report published by the OSCE mission shows the total area of Pristina at 572 sq km.--PjeterPeter (talk) 01:21, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

PristinaPrishtina – The names "Pristina" and "Prishtina" are both common enough for the city (Google Books e.g. gives 474,000 results for "Pristina" and 295,00 for "Prishtina"), however, we should consider the accuracy of each. In each of the spoken languages in the region (Serbian, Albanian, and Turkish), the name is pronounced in the same way: /Prishtina/ (except that Serbian and Turkish use "š" and "ş", respectively, for "sh"). A more accurate English language transliteration, for each of the three aforementioned languages, is "Prishtina". This makes "Pristina" relatively inaccurate as compared to "Prishtina". Also, "Prishtina" has the advantage for being the official name of the city in English language Kosovo government websites like [2]. WP:COMMONNAME: "...inaccurate names for the article subject, as determined in reliable sources, are often avoided even though they may be more frequently used by reliable sources". I would like if we use this quoted policy, and prefer the more accurate name, which is also common enough. Thanks. Khestwol (talk) 16:54, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello, there is a problem with the website link for the "Municipality of Prishtina" on the bottom of the right hand grey column at the starting page. The current website on wikipedia seems to be a japanese sex website for some obscure reason. I propose the edit of inserting the following correct website link: https://kk.rks-gov.net/prishtina/

Environment

As a born Prishtinali (you may see my earlier comment on elections as Blerim, Prishtina born citizen and still living there) I was compelled to open this new section in order to comment and hopefully to provide additional and improved information on following calim/info: "Lately a new green place called Tauk Bashqe has been made half way between Gërmia and City Park"

This gives impression that Taukbashçe (probably originating from Turkish Tavuk Bahçe: Chicken Garden)is a park established, as mentioned 'lately', after the war. This is a misleading fact although I would like to believe it was more likely disarranged than 'served' as such on purpose for malinformation.

To cut the long story short Taukbashçe is a very old city park which borders with Velania, Taslixhe, Vellusha neighborhoods and stretches almost to New Sefajlia neighborhood. It probably predates 20th century. I have no proof to support this claim, but I know it was a park long before I was born in 1969 where as a kid I spent a lot of time playing in and around it, and it was frequently mentioned by my parents and elderly people born in Prishtina in 1920's and 1930's as a place where citizens went for recreation. It had a very popular Tavern, which nowadays after the war was refurbished and renovated.

Taukbashçe is the largest of three main city parks, other two being The City Park and Varrezat Përkujtimore (nowadays refered to as: Varrezat e Dëshmorëve - Martyr's Cemetery).

Media In Prishtina

Prishtina is a major communications centre of media in Kosovo. Almost all of the major media organizations in the Kosovo are based in Prishtina.

Media in Prishtina has its beginnings on 26 November 1975, Prishtina Radio Television or RTP (Albanian: Radio Televizioni i Prishtinës, Serbian: Радио-телевизија Приштина, Radio-televizija Priština) was the first Albanian television channel in Kosovo, and it was part of JRT and had its building in Kosovo's capital Pristina (then a Yugoslav Autonomous Province). Both radio and television transmitted in Albanian, Serbian and Turkish language. Television discontinued transmission on 10 June 1999 and was relocated to Central Serbia, later it was dissolved. After the Kosovo war material and buildings of Radio Television Pristina are under the administration of Radio Television of Kosovo.
