comparison with other parody[edit]

This episode also parodies the movie Aliens. The Slurm Queen is not unlike the Alien Queen, especially in the way she excretes Slurm the way the Alien Queen excreted eggs. Also the fact that Leela nearly becomes a Slurm Queen is similar to the fact that Ripley hosts an Alien Queen in Alien: Resurrection. Harley, 13 September 2006.

The Family guy one it not another parody. It is a copy which is plagiarism.

Question about Fry's Potentcy[edit]

Just a quick clarification: The episode "Fry and the Slurm Factory" implies that the F-ray sterilized Fry. But later in "Roswell That Ends Well" Fry father's his father. Did he get his Fry's Potentcy back somehow? Or is it imposible that he is his own grandpa? 68.48.174.136 15:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hebrew reference[edit]

I removed it because it was unsourced and qualified as original research because it was an attempt to determine what the creators were thinking, in particular the statement "this option might have been chosen to resemble the famous Hebrew word shalom". I brought it back without the original research. The stuff about pronunciation is not original research, just basic knowledge of Hebrew- you wouldn't demand a citation for the claim that "Mortal Kombat" is pronounced "Mortal Combat". Nigel Napalm 07:36, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As I recently brought up at the wikiproject (here) it is time we did something about the cultural references sections. I am moving all unsourced references to the talk pages for the time being in hopes of creating a better, more thoroughly sourced article. The clip on the billboard in the opening credits features Bart, Lisa and Maggie from the old Tracey Ullman Show Simpsons short where Bart, Maggie, and Lisa make ugly faces and look into the mirror.
The Slurm Queen, coupled with the way she excretes Slurm, is a parody of the Alien Queen in the movie Aliens.
When the F ray is used on Bender, it can be seen that one of his components is labeled "6502". This is a reference to the 6502 computer processor, used in early home computers and the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Leela and the professor playing 3D scrabble is a reference to the 3D chess in Star Trek.
Leela's statement that "something is rotten on the planet Wormulon" is a direct parody of the famous line "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
The plot to create New Slurm- as Leela, being a commoner, would produce foul tasting slurm as a slurm queen- is a parody of The Coca-Cola Company's attempt to introduce New Coke, and the urban legend/conspiracy theory that New Coke was produced solely to make the public desire Classic Coke more.
While Zoidberg is in the gift shop, the shirt that he is wearing features the word "שלורם", which could be pronounced as "Slurm" in Hebrew. This is another reference that Zoidberg is based on a stereotypical Jewish character. A more standard transliteration of "Slurm" into Hebrew would be "סלארם" or even "סלרם", because "שלורם" could plausibly be pronounced "slorem".
Before Slurms MacKenzie's death Bender says "Party on, Slurms" and Slurms replies "Party on contest winners"; this is a reference to Wayne's World.
Soylent Cola is a reference to Soylent Green (1973), a futuristic film where the plot twist at the conclusion reveals that the "miracle food" Soylent Green is actually produced from the remains of euthanized humans.
In the Alienese at the end of the contest ad, part of it says, "And the elusive Yak-Face". This is a reference to the hard to find figure from Kenner's 1983 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi action figure line.
The authorities that were contacted to end the production of Slurm was the Bureau of Soft Drinks, Tobacco, and Firearms, a parody of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Alien Messages[edit]

At the end of the Slurm commercial near the beginning of the episode, three messages are displayed in succession, the last is in Alienese and reads "THE FOLLOWING SPECIES ARE INELIGIBLE: SPACE WASPS; SPACE BEAVERS; ANY OTHER ANIMAL WITH THE WORD "SPACE" IN FRONT OF IT; SPACE CHICKENS; AND THE ELUSIVE YAK-FACE."
In Dr. Zoidberg's office, the eye chart with alien markings reads "NO SQUINTING FOUR EYES"

FOX has trademarked the name Slurm. This would probably be worth including in the Slurm section of this article but since I am leaving on vacation this morning I won't have time to add it just now myself.
