Angus, you moved Erengisle, Earl of Orkney to Erengisle Suneson, Earl of Orkney; stating reason Other Norwegian-period Orkney earls have name + patronym or name + epithet (or epithet + name). However, that format certainly is no rule nor convention. If so happens to be, comes from coincidence or intentional moves for one system. However, that system is somewhat against current naming conventions, and besides is a wee too long, as shorter is possible. I can assure that in Swedish sources, as soon as he got to use the title jarl, often his patronymic was dropped. (Perhaps he wanted to assimilate with Jarl Birger.) I think patronymic or epithet is useful only if there are more than one with the same first name. Marrtel 23:56, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
