Armour[edit]

G. A. Osbon says that that a steel protective deck, 1 1/2 " thick, extended for 100' amidships over the magazine, boilers, ane engine room. Osbon, p. 196. E.H. Archibald also gives that figure, p. 43, but on page 50 of the same book says that the armour was 1/2" thick over the engines. This article uses the larger figure. Winfield, R.; Lyon, D. (2004). The Sail and Steam Navy List: All the Ships of the Royal Navy 1815–1889. London: Chatham Publishing. ISBN 978-1-86176-032-6. OCLC 52620555. page 273 says 0.5". I'll ask Rif to spin by, and see if he can cast any light. Shem (talk) 21:02, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Brassey's 1896 Naval Annual also gives 1 1/2 inches for deck armour in this and previous class. P. 262 of the online copy; I cannot discern print page number from there. Kablammo (talk) 15:10, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
