192 Field Regiment is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army.

Formation and history[edit]

Orders for raising 192 Mountain Composite Regiment (Towed) at Dimapur was issued by Army Head Quarters on 15 Dec 1964.The Regiment was raised on 01 Feb 1965 by Lt Col Bhupinder Singh at Diphu, Assam. Initially the regiment was to be raised as Sikh Regiment but later it was decided to be raised as fixed class composition unit with a battery each of Rajputs, Jats and Dogras. It was later converted into All India All Class (AIAC) wef 01 May 1999. Since then the unit has mixed troops from all over the country. The unit boast of being a melting pot composed of troops with diverse customs, culture, languages, traditions and ethos belonging from all over the country. The unit was renamed as 192 Mountain regiment on 15 Sep 1965.

Founding Father.  Lt Col Bhupinder Singh took over the reins of 192 Mountain Composite Regiment (Towed) on 17 March 1965. The Father of the Regiment later retired as the GOC-in-C Central Command.

First of First.The Regiment was equipped with 3.7’’ Howitzers on its raising day.  Lt GS Atariwala was the first Officer to report and arrived at Dimapur on Jan 1965. Subedar Major Raj Bahadur Singh, first Subedar Major of the unit arrived on may 1965. The unit first fired its guns at Mohendijua field firing range.

Motto of the Unit.The motto of the unit “CAN DO” was bestowed by Maj Gen JFR Jacob, GOC 12 Inf Div after witnessing the excellent standards of 192 Mountain Gunners during an exercise which had recently moved out from the jungle terrains of Assam and did so well in the deserts of Rajasthan. The war cry of the unit is “Durga Mata Ki Jai” which carries its lineage to goddess Durga, The Slayer of Demons.

Operations.    Since its raising the unit has participated in various operations.

Operation Cactus Lilly (1971).  Sep 1971, the regiment moved to Bangladesh as part of operation Cactus Lilly and carried out intense firing in support of Mukti Bahini near Harbhanjangarh. An officer of the unit was also amongst those who have trained the Mukti Bahini

Operation Vijay (1999).       During operation Vijay the unit was deployed at Jaurian, Jammu & Kashmir. The unit’s observation post directed accurate fire upon the enemy’s post during an exchange of fire at Akhnoor sector.

Operation Meghdoot (2001).   The unit proceeded for its operational deployment at central glacier. During its deployment at the observation post, the team came under heavy enemy fire. Once the firing was over, it came to light that OP officer was missing. L/Nk Dilbag Singh under heavy enemy fire volunteered and brought back the officer who was lying unconscious at 1800ft below the post. For this gallant action and saving the life of an officer L/Nk Dilbag Singh was awarded with Sena Medal.

Operation Parakram (2001-02).      After the terrorist attacked on Parliament in the wake of 13 December 2001, Operation Parakram was launched. The unit was deployed at its operational gun areas in Amritsar, Punjab. The unit was very well prepared for ever action against the enemy.

Counter Insurgency operations.    The Unit has also extensively been part of various counter insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab during its tenures. Operations Sher Kalander and Atank Daman are to name few of operations.

HADR Role.The Unit apart from its operational roles has also performed in various other activities which helped in Nation Building. The Unit is always the First to response in any natural or men made calamities. It has always endeavoured for the safety and welfare of the nation. The Unit has also conducted limb replacement camps in the remote villages where there is lack of medical facilities. The unit has always encouraged youth to join the Army.

Defence Expo 2022.The unit was entrusted with the responsibility of Indian Army Enclosure for static display of Indian Army equipment as part of Defence Expo 2022 and was responsible for overall coordination for complete static display at Helipad Exhibition Centre at Gandhinagar.

Operation Morbi Rahat.     The unfortunate bridge collapse incident at Julta Pul in Morbi district of Gujarat where the HADR Columns of this unit was launched. The unit deployed its columns for search and rescue mission. The unit rescued a large number of survivors. The tireless efforts of the unit facilitated the local administration in flawless evacuation of overall rescue efforts & minimized the causality.

Limb Replacement Camp.The unit conducted artificial limb replacement camp at Ramsar as part of Nation building efforts. A team of special doctors of Kiwani Club, New Delhi was incorporated alongwith the unit for casting & fabrication of limbs.  A total of 207 specially abled persons benefitted from the camp and their mobility was restored. The noble gesture by Golden Katar Gunners was appreciated by one and all.

The unit completed its 59 glorious years of selfless service to the Indian Army on 01 Feb 2024 and in this illustrious 59 years have earned a rich history and a great lineage of soldiers. The Unit has served in various terrains all over India like, The Jungles of Northeast, the snow caped mountains of the Himalayas, the Hot Deserts of Rajasthan or The Cold Desert of Glacier, the Unit has always stood high and above by setting exemplary standards of professionalism in all fields..[1] The regiment consists of 1921, 1922 and 1923 field batteries.

Class Composition[edit]

The regiment, at formation, had a fixed class composition of Dogras, Rajputs and Jats. In 1999, the regiment was converted to a mixed class unit.[1]

War Cry[edit]

The war cry of the regiment is कुछ भी कर सकते है (Kuch Bhi Kar Sakte), which translates to ‘Can Do’.[1]
