The Mill Creek Rail Yards were named after a stream that used to run east into the Mississippi River in what is today downtown St. Louis. By the end of the 19th century the stream has completely disappeared and the Mill Creek Valley was being used for rail and freight yards. The Terminal Railroad Association owned and operated the yards which had one freight house in 1893 and plans for 5 more. The Terminal Railroad Association did build more freight houses, including Union Station on 18th and Market.
