DescriptionStuG III Ausf.D – TankFest 2019 (49905982398).jpg
German WW2 era Assault gun
Serial No 90678
Official name:- Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.D
Ordnance Inventory Designation:- Sd.Kfz.142
Main Armament:- Krupp 75mm StuK 37 L/24 gun
The StuG III was the most produced German tracked vehicle of WW2, with over 10,000 produced. It was widely used as a Tank Destroyer, although the early models low velocity ‘short-gun’ was not ideal for penetrating armour. Several later models were still in use with the Syrian Army during the 1967 Six-Day War.
This rare beast is one of only three surviving Ausf.D variants of the StuG III. Allocated to Sonderverband 288 (Q2301191) in North Africa, it was captured and sent to the UK for testing. It later ended up as a range target at Pirbright. When acquired by Jon Phillips it was just a stripped and badly damaged hulk. It is now complete and fully operational and is a testament to the skilled workmanship behind its stunning restoration.
It is seen making a guest appearance at TankFest 2019.
