DescriptionSioni Winwns - A Breton onion salesman on the corner of Heol Niwbwrch - geograph.org.uk - 589505.jpg
English: Sioni Winwns - A Breton onion salesman on the corner of Heol Niwbwrch. This is a street scene that I have not witnessed for almost half a century. The Breton onion salesmen were familiar figures in the slate quarrying communities of my childhood, selling from door to door in a mixture of Welsh and Breton (Breton being Welsh spoken with a French accent, or at least that what we kids were led to believe - in reality, it is slightly more complex than that). Even so, Y Lydaweg (the Breton language)and Y Gymraeg(Welsh)are closely related. In those days the Bretons who came to North West Wales made their base at Tremadog Town Hall, now a high fashion store. 272714
